Safe Recruitment and PVG

RYA Scotland promotes a safe and positive environment for children and young people through safeguarding policies, safe recruitment and PVG checks.

RYA Scotland, as an organisation will take all reasonable steps to ensure that, through safe recruitment, appropriate operating procedures and training, that we offer a safe and fun environment to children and young people taking part in RYA Scotland, and RYA, events and activities.

PVG Checks

One layer of assurance is the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG). This has been in place since 2011 and updated most recently in 2025 following the Disclosure Scotland Act (2020). Clubs and Training Centres in Scotland have a duty to ensure that people (volunteer or otherwise) working with children and young people are suitable to do so. PVG checks are one part of this process.

Guidance for Clubs and Organisations

RYA Scotland signpost those looking to carry out these free volunteer checks to Volunteer Scotland Disclosure Services (VSDS). Organisations are urged to continue to assess roles carefully, ensuring they meet the criteria for PVG checks. Decisions should be documented, and safeguarding policies must be maintained beyond the legal requirements of PVG checks.

If you have any PVG queries, then please email us.

PVG Resources
